About Alice Springs

Alice Springs sits just 200 km south of the geographic centre of Australia. The town began as a repeater station along the Overland Telegraph Line. Its colourful history includes the pioneering stories of Afghan cameleers, flying doctors and outback explorers. They are tales you’ll still encounter today, at sites in and around town.

The Alice is surrounded by rugged gaps and gorges, and stunning desert landscapes, framed by the MacDonnell Ranges to the east and west.

Today, Alice Springs is a well known centre of contemporary Aboriginal art and an international destination for outback adventure. It’s a place of contrasts, where one day you find yourself in the galleries and art centres, in town and around; the next, you’re heading out on the Larapinta Trail.

Whether it’s quad bike riding, four-wheel driving and camping or taking a swim in a beautiful natural waterhole, Alice’s trump card is its proximity to nature.
