The sandstone monolith of Uluru lies 440 kilometres south-west of Alice Springs in the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. Rising sharply from the surrounding tablelands, it stands 348 metres high and, like an iceberg, has most of its bulk below the surface.
Kata Tjuta, also known as The Olgas, is about 30 kilometres west of Uluru. The Anangu name of Kata Tjuta means ‘many heads’, a description of the 36 rounded red domes that rise from the desert floor. The tallest is over 500 metres high.
The landscape is laden with meaning for the Anangu people, the traditional owners. Creation stories and the associated knowledge of law, relationships, plants and animals all live in the shapes and features of the land.
Climate
Uluru has a semi-arid climate with four identifiable seasons. Summer days from December to February are hot, but winter nights can be surprisingly cold. Spring and autumn have warm days and cool nights.

Getting here and around
You can fly daily from Perth, Sydney, Cairns and Alice Springs direct. Direct flights operate twice a week from Melbourne.
Flights from Darwin and Brisbane connect via Alice Springs.
Ayers Rock Airport is just six kilometres (10 minutes) from Voyages Ayers Rock Resort. Scenic flights are available over Uluru and Kata Tjuta.
Fixed and rotary winged aircraft fly into the airport, with around 350,000 - 400,000 commercial passengers per year. It's also a popular stopping off point for private pilots and their passengers.
If driving from Alice Springs, allow 5 hours to complete the 450km drive on the Stuart and Lasseter Highways. For the more adventurous, the 8 hour drive along the Red Centre Way is spectacular. There are several car hire companies in Alice Springs township and at the airport, plus a range of coach options.
