The NT Convention Bureau recently staged a four day Unconventional Darwin Showcase which attracted 20 business events planners from the interstate association and corporate sectors, as well as Business Event planner specialists.  Similar Showcase events are to follow in Uluru in mid-October and in Alice Springs in early May 2018.

The Showcase highlighted Darwin’s status as a business centre of global significance, with its range of specialty sectors such as tropical and remote health, critical and emergency health care, mining, aquaculture and agribusiness.  A tour of the renowned National Critical Care and Trauma Response Centre’s warehouse facility and a visit to local not-for-profit organisation, Helping People Achieve, demonstrated Darwin’s scope for off-site technical tours.

The group also undertook a Pudakul Aboriginal Cultural Tour near Humpty Doo, with young representatives from the local Adelaide and Mary River Region community providing fascinating insights into cultural traditions and protocols, as well as the skills required for spear-throwing and basket weaving.

Rebecca Thompson, Sponsorship & Events Manager with the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine
was very impressed by the NCCTRC, HPA and the cultural components of Darwin Showcase.

“The technical tour visits to the not-for-profit organisation, Helping People Achieve and the National Critical Care and Trauma Response Centre were fantastic,” she said. “Another stand-out experience was the Pudakul Aboriginal Cultural Tour - it was great to learn about culture from the young people of their community. Indigenous health care is a huge part of our organisation’s business, so this interaction is so very relevant.”

The Showcase program included ‘NT Meets the Market’ business sessions at the Darwin Convention Centre, which enabled planners to meet in one-on-one appointments with 17 Darwin and Top End operators. They also heard from a range of speakers regarding why they should choose Darwin for their business events.

Accommodation was hosted across three properties – Club Tropical, Hilton Darwin and DoubleTree by Hilton, Darwin. Site inspections were also arranged of other Darwin residential meeting facilities including Oaks Elan Darwin, Vibe/Adina, DoubleTree by Hilton Esplanade and the adjacent Darwin Entertainment Centre.
